A Journey of an Underdog Towards Virality: Open Mics in India
Open Mic Platforms in India: A Gateway for Performing Artists
Open mic platforms in India are rapidly growing as people express their interest in the spoken word. Stand-up comedians like Abhishek Upmanyu and Anubhav Singh Bassi have gone viral. Poets like Nayab Midha and Manhar Seth have also gained popularity. As a result, people have shown interest in the performing arts, thus eventually in Open Mics. They are interested not only as an audience but also as performers. Even musicians who release their originals on streaming platforms need such open mic platforms.
Artforms like stand-up comedy, poetry, and original music need an audience to test out content crafted by an individual. This occurs before presenting it on a larger scale, i.e., releasing it on YouTube, Spotify, or Instagram as per the artist’s preference. In such cases, open mics are the best way. They are an integral part of the journey for any spoken word artist.

The Rise of Open Mics in India
Comedy at the Canvas Laugh Club started everything in India for Modern Comedy. People auditioned at an open mic to get a slot in the “Laughter Launchpad.” However, it was shut down later on due to some unknown reasons. Then, aspiring comedians started visiting a comparatively smaller venue, the Playground Comedy Studio. It was also known for the marvelous theater acts by the owners. They hosted comedy open mics frequently. Anyone could pay a nominal fee, arrange a bringer, and perform their set of 4-5 minutes. It was the home venue for Anubhav Singh Bassi. It was also the go-to place for Nishant Suri and many more popular comedians of Delhi.
In poetry and storytelling, communities like UnErase Poetry, Tape A Tale, and Spill Poetry have made significant contributions. They provide a broad spectrum of poetic expression. The exact timeline of all such communities is not known. However, they have given us some of the most viral and prominent poets like Helly Shah, Yahya Bootwala, Gurjan Saini, and Amandeep Khayal.
Many more poets became popular after their videos went viral through one of these platforms. There are a fewer platforms and communities organizing such events for musicians as well. Mixed open mics are being hosted by communities like Speaking Souls, Lekhaks Heart, and The Modern Poets in Delhi and other Tier 1 cities.
The Journey from Underdog to Viral Artist
Anyone who wishes to be on stage and reach an audience of millions must start their journey on this path. All of these popular artists were once underdogs. They struggled in almost empty rooms. They were trying their art forms and searching for optimal stage time. Open mics helped them meet these needs; they kept performing, and the rest is the story of virality over time.
